Open Day for the Public Planned for Christchurch Hospital Hagley

Update on Christchurch Hospital Hagley

The Ministry of Health and Canterbury DHB have released a joint statement updating the community on the progress of the Christchurch Hospital Hagley (known as the Acute Services Building during construction).

The project is largely complete, and plans have now been announced for the staged approach to handing over responsibility to CDHB beginning from November 2019. There is a detailed migration plan to facilitate the move into the new facility to minimize impact on service. Most services will be operating in the new hospital by the end of January 2020.

Now that the new hospital is nearing completion, the public will have the opportunity to get their first glimpses inside the new facility. An open day is planned for Sunday, 6 October 2019 to give the public an opportunity to get an early look at the new hospital before it opens.

What is in the new facility?

According to the Ministry of Health, Christchurch Hospital Hagley is one of the largest and most complex hospitals built in New Zealand, with a cost of over $483 million. The new 62,000 square metre hospital building is located on the existing Christchurch Hospital campus, and now has an expanded emergency department intensive care unit, as well as state-of-the-art radiology, a rooftop helicopter pad, and 12 operating theatres.

Construction on Christchurch Hospital Hagley

The main contractor on the build was construction company CPB, which is also the contractor on the new Christchurch Convention Centre and the Metro Sports Facility. The Ministry of Health and CDHB thanked CPB in their joint statement, along with all the sub-contractors who worked above and beyond to deliver on the challenging project, and the architects, planners, CHB staff, suppliers, service providers, patient groups, and members of the public who had input into the design process.
