Toolbox Talk - Power Tool Safety

Tools are such a common part of our lives that it is difficult to remember that they pose a hazard. All tools are manufactured with safety in mind but, tragically, a serious accident often occurs before steps are taken to search out and avoid or eliminate tool-related hazards.

In the process of removing or avoiding the hazards, we must learn to recognize the hazards associated with the different types of tools and the safety precautions necessary to prevent those hazards.

Discussion Points

• All power tools must be tested, tagged with the date of the last inspection and when the next inspection is due recorded on the tag.
• All power tools are to be used with an RCD
• Use the right tool for the job. Match the tool to the task
• Examine all tools for damage before each use. Inspect power cords. Take equipment or tools out of service when faulty or damaged and label them ‘DO NOT USE' and report the condition to your supervisor
• Read the tool's instruction manual, and follow use and maintenance guidelines
• Make sure all safety guards and devices are in place
• Always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. Safety glasses and gloves should be worn while operating most power tools. Other PPE may also be necessary.
• Avoid using power tools in wet or damp environments.
• Unplug tools before installing, adjusting and changing any accessory or attachment.
• Maintain solid footing and good balance when using tools. Hold or brace the tool securely. Be aware of your surrounding environment.
